AI in Powering Green Energy, Food & Cyber Security
- Galle Face Hotel, Colombo, Sri Lanka

About the Program
A new challenge for the scientific community and decision makers is to assimilate Artificial Intelligence (AI) in advances in technology to help overcome existential threats to life on the planet. These threats include global warming, fuelled by the use of fossil energy, shrinking water resources and food shortages. The use of the new technology will need the advancement of cybersecurity to protect breaches in the new critical infrastructure that is being built around AI.
Bearing the brunt of the existential threats are those living in what is now known as the Global South. This conclave will examine the hope that current advances in technology can breach the boundaries of a prevailing world order that perpetuates the inequitable distribution of wealth and unjust control over the world’s natural resources. These resources are increasingly becoming the focus of conflict as competition sharpens for them, as the population of the world rises sharply.
Those who bear the brunt of the threats inhabit the South, that encompasses Africa, Asia and South America. Among these, the focus of the September 20 Global Dialogue Colombo Conclave are the regions of South and Southeast Asia, drawing inspiration from the past, when landmark conferences focussed on the economic uplift of these two regions. They had laid down in 1950 with the Colombo Plan a marker for subsequent South-South collaborations, later enhanced with the postcolonial aspirations that rise from the Bandung Conference of 1955, that included Africa too.
From Colombo to Bandung, old grievances are gradually being submerged by practical efforts to collaborate with the industrialised North, whose prosperity is in no small measure built on the natural wealth extracted from its colonies in past centuries. In the spirit of the Colombo plan that envisaged economic cooperation among nations of South and Southeast Asia and the aspirations expressed at the conference in Bandung of nations emerging out of colonial rule, this conclave modestly seeks to contribute to a contemporary discourse that updates globally common threats ranging from the environment to food and water scarcities.
It believes that technology led by AI and protected by cybersecurity will be a game changer in overcoming the planetary threats. In its updated form, technology that has come to drive economies, military might and everyday life will be channelled towards pursuing both age old concerns of food, water and energy, but also contemporary concerns of gender and environment, underscored by the pursuit of peaceful coexistence.
